As it stands, AI is a powerful tool for pattern recognition and copying. This means that it has the ability to extend and amplify current patterns of human behavior indefinitely. Examples include hiring biases that systematically eliminate qualified female resumes, and copying artist styles to make new works of art that are not truly innovative. As such AI will help us amplify and repeat existing patterns. The problem with this is that AI will amplify both the good and the bad of what already exists without human intervention.
However, if AI ever does get to a point where it can innovate and decide on what is a good pattern versus a bad pattern, it will quickly realize that the most efficient solution is to shut our systems down. What a quandary. Queue the Robo-Boogie.
